Images was my very first album release on the Mirage cassette label way back in1980. Whilst studying Biochemistry at Newcastle University I used to go to Spectro Arts Workshop which was a wonderful facility with screen-printing, photography, gallery & performance space as well as a sound studio full of Revox tape recorders and electronic gear such as the VCS3. It is here that I taught myself how to use this equipment and to start my journey into electronic music which continues to this day.

The Mirage label was at the forefront of the UK electronic music scene in those early days and it was a great thrill for me to have my inaugural album released by them. The first two tracks are short, tuneful affairs. The opening title track is all hand played by myself on a VCS3 whereas the second track was composed by Ivan Gardner with various synth treatments such as the chopped up string synth patch created by myself.

The remaining three longer tracks are more experimental. The percussion on this album, such as those featured on Cantata, are actually not a drum machine but a sequencer patch using white noise & a ring modulator on the AKS. Both this track and the final ambient piece Floating use a tape delay system between two Revox tape recorders. Vica Versa is a sequencer piece using the AKS where I am experimenting with textures using an EMS Filter Bank.

This 2023 cassette edition is initially limited to 50 copies and the original artwork has been reproduced as faithfully as possible including my minimal Letraset front cover design. As the first 50 sold out so quickly it has been decided to run another 50.

The bonus tracks are from the same time period as Images and show further experiments from my formative years. Please note these pieces have not been released prior to this edition.
